Evolution or Ignorance of Education

All through ongoing history creationists and evolutionists have contended whether development ought to be a piece of America's government funded training. Regardless of whether development is science actuality, or sci-fi. Development being a science dependent on insights has a few flaws, albeit numerous ideas in science or math do. The way toward finding out about development is a vital piece of a balanced understudy's instruction because of the way that it is a measurably demonstrated science and evacuating it thus denies certain understudy's privileges. In an understudy's scholastic vocation that an understudy is undoubtedly at once or another must take a science class. Science, being the primary subject of conversation in this class, ought to at one point incorporate development, since that is the thing that advancement is, a science. Despite the fact that to genuinely comprehend advancement in its fullest setting, one must not look to a word reference, for word reference definitions simply are excessively obscure. One of the most regarded developmental scientists has characterized organic advancement as follows: â€Å"In the broadest sense, advancement is only change, as is all-inescapable; universes, dialects, and political frameworks all advance. Natural development †¦ is change in the properties of populaces of life forms that rise above the lifetime of a solitary person. The ontogeny of an individual isn't viewed as development; singular life forms don't advance. The adjustments in populaces that are viewed as developmental are those that are inheritable by means of the hereditary material starting with one age then onto the next. Natural development might be slight or significant; it grasps everything from slight changes in the extent of various alleles inside a populace, (for example, those deciding blood classifications) to the progressive modifications that drove from the soonest protoorganism to snails, honey bees, giraffes, and dandelions. † †Douglas J. Futuyma in Evolutionary Biology, Sinauer Associates 1986 All sciences depend on some type of confirmation. Regardless of whether it being living evidence, for example, in Biology where one can watch cell division, numerical verification, for example, in computing air-obstruction in Physics, or factual confirmation as in all science tests when an anticipated outcome happens over and over. All sciences have at any rate one of these characteristics, including development. The evidence of advancement's presence has been on this planet since the time life was shaped from carbon based particle structures. People, nonetheless, have not been in presence sufficiently long to watch appropriately the wonders of advancement. In spite of the fact that by utilizing the most recent innovation we can precisely watch the procedure of advancement as it happened after some time quite a while in the past is as yet happening today. Charles Darwin, a British naturalist, made the principal significant advance in ordering development during his examinations in the Galapagos Archipelago in 1831 when he was just 22 years old. Because of this he is credited with first framing an organized hypothesis of advancement. During his investigations in the Galapagos Archipelago he found a large number of widely varied vegetation that had total disengagement from the remainder of the world. One specific sort of creature that he gave close consideration to be a little fowl called a Finch. This was idea as being straightforward from the outset, however as he ventured out to the various islands he saw a wide range of types of finches. These finches likely dropped from one sort of progenitor and afterward, because of disconnection and through possibility, various atmospheres and normal powers, for example, food accessibility and type, they advanced into a wide range of kinds of finches. A few finches had various colorings, wingspan, and even nose style. In absolute he discovered thirteen distinct assortments of finches. Later on in Charles' life he framed numerous speculations on the sources of man. This was straightforwardly identified with his investigations in the Galapagos Archipelago. In his book â€Å"Decent of Man† written in 1871 he proclaims why man had been so oblivious by denying advancement in the last pieces of part one. â€Å"Thus we can see how it has happened that man and all other vertebrate creatures have been built on a similar general model, why they go through the equivalent beginning times of advancement, and why they hold certain fundamentals in like manner. Therefore we should rankly to concede their locale of drop: to take some other view, is to concede that our own structure, and that of the considerable number of creatures around us, is a unimportant catch laid to ensnare our judgment. This end is incredibly reinforced, in the event that we look to the individuals from the entire creature arrangement, and consider the proof got from their affinities or grouping, their topographical appropriation and land progression. It is just our common partiality, and that self-importance which caused our progenitors to pronounce that they were plunged from mythical beings, which drives us to challenge to this end. In any case, the time will before ong come, when it will be thought superb that naturalists, who were all around familiar with the similar structure and advancement of man, and different warm blooded creatures, ought to have accepted that each was crafted by a different demonstration of creation. † (Darwin) As found in the above content, Charles Darwin clarifies how factually man evolved from a lower type of life. This is legitimately identified with the finches because of that similar powers that made them develop may have made people advance too. However still a few schools in America have taken a stab at forbidding the educating of development in the homeroom. Each understudy in a United States government funded school has a protected option to hear the entire story with regards to advancement. It is known as the main revision in the Bill of Rights. As per the American Civil Liberties Union or ACLU, the expert on social liberties, expresses that each understudy has the option to a non-one-sided instruction (ACLU Urges†¦ ). In the Supreme Court choice Edwards v. Aguillard, 482 U. S. 578 (1987), the Court decided that to bargain by precluding advancement and creationism from the science educational plan would â€Å"undermine the arrangement of a far reaching logical training. On this point, the law is clear, and the Supreme Court put its foot down †the First Amendment disallows a state to change its educational program basically so as to guard a strict conviction. That is a foundation of religion, and it's unlawful. (Edwards) So not exclusively is expelling development from the study hall unjustified, however it is illegal. Creationism has its place in the study hall just as Evolutionism, in spite of the fact that not a similar homeroom. Creationism has a place in a class like Theology or History of Religion. This is on the grounds that creationism is the confidence in the scriptural record of the formation of the world. Scriptural significance the Bible, limiting it just to a gathering of religions. Alleged â€Å"Creation Science† isn't a science by any stretch of the imagination. Of late it has been to a greater extent a political development than a science. Sure creationists may have offices like the â€Å"Institute for Creation Research† (a congregation that does no logical exploration by any means) and the â€Å"Creation Research Society† (another congregation that additionally does no logical examination), yet at long last there isn't a smidgen of science in creation. As of late numerous science educators in government funded schools have attempted to work their way around instructing development by encouraging an alleged â€Å"intelligent structure theory† (Washington State). This is only one of the numerous pretenses of creation science, and it doesn't change the way that states and school regions may not receive strict hypotheses as guidelines in school educational programs. Creationists will consistently exist, since numbness will consistently exist, in spite of the fact that advancement will consistently have a spot in science educational program. Creationists have confidence in creation in light of the fact that their lords have advised them to have faith in Creationism as a device to their â€Å"salvation†. They couldn't care less that advancement is a watched truth: they have â€Å"faith† that Creationism is valid, and that is all they need. They believe realities and truth to be a prevention to their pass to Heaven. The lessons of these individuals ought to have no spot, and will have no spot in our kids' science homerooms, just advancement and other demonstrated sciences reserve the privilege to be available. Subsequently, the way toward finding out about development is a vital piece of a balanced understudy's instruction because of the way that it is a factually demonstrated science and expelling it thus disavows certain understudy's privileges.

The Rise of Al Capone and Lucky Luciano

The Five Points Gang is one of the most infamous and storied gangs in the history of New York City. Five Points was formed in the 1890’s and maintained its’ status until the late 1910’s when America saw the beginning stages of organized crime. Both Al Capone and Lucky Luciano would rise out of this gang to become major gangsters in America.   The Five Points gang was from the lower east side of Manhattan and numbered as many as 1500 members including two of the most recognizable names in â€Å"mob† history – Al Capone and Lucky Luciano – and who would change the way that the Italian crime families would operate. Al Capone Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 17, 1899, to hardworking immigrant parents. After quitting school after the sixth grade, Capone held several legitimate jobs that included working as a pinboy in a bowling alley, a clerk in a candy store, and a cutter in a book bindery. As a gang member, he worked as a bouncer and bartender for fellow gangster Frankie Yales at the Harvard Inn. While working at the Inn, Capone received his nickname â€Å"Scarface† after he insulted a patron and was attacked by her brother. Growing up, Capone became a member of the Five Points Gang, with his leader being Johnny Torrio. Torrio moved from New York to Chicago to run brothels for James (Big Jim) Colosimo. In 1918, Capone met Mary Mae Coughlin at a dance. Their son, Albert Sonny Francis was born on December 4, 1918, and Al and Mae were wed on December 30th. In 1919, Torrio offered Capone a job to run a brothel in Chicago which Capone quickly accepted and moved his entire family, which included his mother and brother to Chicago. In 1920, Colosimo was assassinated – allegedly by Capone – and Torrio took control of Colosimo’s operations to which he added bootlegging and illegal casinos. Then in 1925, Torrio was wounded during an attempted assassination after which he placed Capone in control and moved back to his home country of Italy. Al Capone was now finally the man who was in charge of the city of Chicago. Lucky Luciano Salvatore Luciana was born on November 24, 1897, in the Lercara Friddi, Sicily. His family immigrated to New York City when he was ten years old, and his name was changed to Charles Luciano. Luciano became known by the nickname â€Å"Lucky† which he claimed he earned by surviving a number of severe beatings while growing up on the Lower East side of Manhattan. By the age of 14, Luciano dropped out of school, had been arrested numerous times, and had become a member of the Five Points Gang where he befriended Al Capone. By 1916 Luciano was also offering protection from the local Irish and Italian gangs to his fellow Jewish teens for five to ten cents a week. It was also around this time that he became associated with Meyer Lansky who would become one of his closest friends and his future business partner in crime. On January 17, 1920, the world would change for Capone and Luciano with the ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibiting the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. â€Å"Prohibition† as it became known provided Capone and Luciano the ability to garner huge profits through bootlegging.   Shortly after the start of Prohibition, Luciano along with future Mafia bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello had started a bootlegging consortium that would become the largest such operation in all of New York and allegedly stretched as far south as Philadelphia. Supposedly, Luciano was personally grossing approximately $12,000,000 a year from bootlegging alone. Capone controlled all alcohol sales in Chicago and was able to set up an elaborate distribution system that consisted of bringing in alcohol from Canada as well as setting up hundreds of small breweries in and around Chicago. Capone had his own delivery trucks and speakeasies. By 1925, Capone was earning $60,000,000 per year from alcohol alone.

Two Viewpoints Dealing with the Interpretation of...

There generally are two viewpoints that exist when dealing with the interpretation of mythology in present day. The first, that mythology is a good thing, that it spreads culture and that the belief that they were created to comfort the ignorant is completely false. The other, which myths, while having their uses, have no place in a modern society such as the one we live in. I personally believe in the latter. I will explain my beliefs by first explaining why myths came about in the first place, and why we do not need myths anymore to accomplish those goals. A well-accepted hypothesis is that myths came up as a source of explanation for when there is no explanation available and, as people fear the unknown, myths came up to explain these uncertainties away. However, in the age of modern science, most everything in the universe can now be explained. Spiders don’t weave webs because a temperamental goddess was angry at a weaver, they do so to capture prey and eat them. Many counter this argument by saying the actual, scientific explanations are often cold and uninteresting in comparison to the stories that could have been drummed up in their stead, but I steadfastly disagree. Once one starts to understand that the unknown world is greater than what the human mind could possibly understand and comprehend, once one starts truly hearing the rhythm of the world, it is then when the truth becomes more interesting than fiction. To cover up these unknowns with tales of fantasy isShow MoreRelated Why Creationism Should Not Be Taught in Public Schools Essays1921 Words   |  8 Pagescurriculum in schools. Question: Discuss about the Analysis of Tegel Holding Pty Ltd. Answer: Introduction: Analysis of Tegel Holding Pty ltd: This Company engaged in the activities of poultry process in New Zealand. Company is earning well, and able to repay its debt. Financial statements of the company show good amount of profit in the company. Company PL account shows that company earns revenue for 582.4 million in 2016, and balance sheet of the company shows that there is very less amount of borrowing in the company that is 130000,000 in the company. therefore, for the growth of the company, it has following financial options. Following are the pros and cons of various finance options, and characteristics of those options: IPO: Initial Public Offer is the process through which private companies can offer its stock and shares for sale to the public for the first time. In this there can be any new or old company can decide to list on the Australian stock exchange, and offer the public for the sale of its stock. IPO allows the Australian companies to offer their shares to large number of public, and arrange capital for future growth (AIA, n.d.). Private placement: in this company can made offer of sale of its shares and securities not to the public, but through private offering. In this shares are offered to small number of investors chosen by company. In this investors are large banks, mutual funds, insurance companies and pension funds (ASIC, n.d.). Bank loan: it is an arrangement between the corporation and financial institution which was usually created to raise fund for the bigger capital expenditure or to meet the cost related to operational activities which are unable to meet by the company. Plant and Equipment Lease back: it is a financial transaction in which one sells its asset to another, for the long period of time leases back the same asset. Through this arrangement person is able to use the asset for longer period of time but not owns the asset. These arrangements help the company in paying back its debts and improve the position of the balance sheet of the company (AASB, n.d.). After analyzing the position of the company Tegel Holding Pty ltd these two options best for the company: IPO- IPO is the option through which company can offer its securities to the public at large and arrange capital for future growth through public. For Tegel Holding Pty ltd IPO would be the good option because company can offer its shares to the public at large, and access to the capital for its future projects. Comapnny is earning good revenue, and is able to pay dividends to its shareholders and increase the value of shares. In 2016 revenue of the company was 582.4 million which shows that company is working well and able to increase the value of shares (Tegal, 2016). Companies can arrange funds without paying high rate of interest to the money lenders. Share capital of the company increases without increase in the debt of the company. Disadvantages: There are number of stringent regulations for the IPO which company has to fulfill. Usually the cost of IPO is high for the companies. For new companies rules made by the ASIC are not easy, and stringent to follow.Bank Loan: in my point of view company can also choose to raise funds through bank loan because debt ratio of the company is less, and amount of borrowing by the company is only 130000. Company is earning well and able to pay interest amount to the bank. Company can arrange funds through financial institutions for the expansion of its business. Company can choose any option whether secured loan or unsecured loan (Tegal, 2016). Advantages: Company can arrange funds through financial institutions for meeting the cost of its operational activities and for the future expansion of the company. Easy availability of funds, and easy credibility. There is benefit in tax planning. Disadvantages: Cost for raising bank loan is high. High payment of interest. Stringent rules of bank for obtaining loans. Obtaining loans from bank is challenging because banks need securities. References: AIA. Initial Public Offering ( IPO ). A marketing plan refers to â€Å"a written document that describes how an organization intends to reach its target market†. It entails a situation analysis, an organization’s goals, marketing strategies, and marketing mix decisions. This pap er discusses the marketing plan for the successful development, commercialization, and introduction of the Samsung galaxy tablet into the market. Situation Analysis Strengths In the past decades, Samsung has emerged as one of the most competitive companies. Samsung boasts of several strengths. First, it focuses on producing electronic devices with a hardware system, which is compatible with most software and operating systems. This has enabled Samsung to have an edge over its competitors such as Apple. As a result, â€Å"Samsung’s Android mobile phones and tablets have gained a huge market share as opposed to Apple’s iOS and OS X†. Second, Samsung is one of the most innovative mobile phone companies. For example, â€Å"in 2011 Samsung was among the top patent assignees in the United States of America†. The acquisition of several patents has enabled it to surpass most of its competitors. Additionally, the company has won several awards for its productsâ₠¬â„¢ designs, which are user friendly and unique. Samsung also has a major focus on designing environmentally friendly products.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Moreover, Samsung’s manufacturing firms are located in countries where the cost of production is relatively low. As a result, it incurs low costs of production; hence, it can offer its products at a lower price. Fourth, Samsung has managed to market its brand effectively. It is among the top rising brands. â€Å"From 2011 to 2012, the company’s popularity rose by 40 percent†. This rise was mainly attributed to strategic marketing techniques. For example, the company uses varied avenues such as sporting events to market its products. Weaknesses Despite its streng ths, Samsung faces a number of challenges. First, the company lacks its own software. Software production can enable a company to attain a high profit margin. It also helps to popularize a company’s product and promote its brand loyalty. Therefore, Samsung is disadvantaged compared to its main competitors such as Apple. Second, the company has businesses in a number of industries. Thus, â€Å"it might lose focus by competing in several industries†. In the past years, Samsung has been found guilty of patent infringement. Consequently, this has had a negative effect on its reputation. Third, Samsung is one of the largest electronic companies in the world. Nonetheless, the company experiences a relatively low gross profit margin due to the company’s aggressive price cuts on its products. Opportunities Samsung has numerous opportunities that it can seize in order to enable it expand further. For instance, â€Å"the smartphone market in India is one of the least pen etrated among the Asian countries†. Therefore, its strong presence in India can enable it to maximize gains in India’s smartphone market. The introduction of smartphones and tablets has led to a major increase in the demand for application processors. Fortunately, â€Å"Samsung is one of the main manufacturers of application processors for tablets and smartphones†. Therefore, Samsung stands a better chance of meeting this demand because it has a superior experience in the production of processors.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Marketing Plan for the Samsung Galaxy Tablet specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Samsung is also one of the dominant players in the tablet market. Therefore, the company has high chances of expanding its niche in the tablet market by producing unique and high quality tablet models. Samsung has a large patents portfolio. As a result, it has a competitive advantage over it rivals. Therefore, it can be able to acquire more patents through acquisition of other firms. Threats Samsung faces a number of threats to its business operations. First, the smartphone market in the developed countries is highly saturated; hence, it might not reap major gains in the developed countries. Second, rapid technological change is also a major threat to the company. Currently, Samsung is under pressure to keep on producing new products at a faster rate. However, this is often difficult whenever a company aims at being innovative and successful because innovations take considerable time. Third, Samsung is prone to experience major price wars. For instance, the company has been offering its products at a relatively lower price compared to its competitors. Therefore, its competitors may also follow the trend. Unfortunately, this will significantly erode Samsung’s profit margins, which are already low. Industry Trends and Competition Samsung is one of the major compan ies in the tablet industry. Others include Apple, Asus, Acer, and Nokia. All the players in the tablet industry have continued to produce new tablet models. For example, at the beginning of 2014, Asus introduced the Transformer Book TD300. â€Å"The new tablet model by Asus switches instantly from Windows 8.1 to Android and back†. In a similar manner, Apple has also developed new tablet models such as the iPad Air, which â€Å"has a thinner aluminum body chassis, identical to the iPad mini†. Furthermore, the tablet market is likely to expand due to an anticipated decline in the use of laptops. A number of people have adopted tablets because of their convenience.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Therefore, the price and quality of a tablet plays a critical role in determining customers’ purchasing patterns. The Organization’s Mission Statement A mission statement is a statement of purpose. It explains the reason for the existence of an organization. It guides the decisions and actions of an organization. A mission statement for a commercial company should comprise three major elements. These include â€Å"the key market, the contribution of the organization, and the distinction of its product or service†. Therefore, Samsung will adopt the following mission statement: â€Å"to be the most successful electronic company in the world by developing user friendly tablets that brings a lively experience to all internet users.† Performance g oals The company will pursue the following goals. First, the company aims at realizing a monthly turnover of $500,000. Second, the company aims at supplying the Samsung galaxy tablet to the major online stores by the end of the first month after its launch. Third, the company plans to distribute the Samsung galaxy tablet in all Asian countries within the first six months. Marketing strategy A marketing strategy should â€Å"enable an organization to concentrate its resources on the optimal opportunities with the major aim of increasing sales and achieving sustainable competitive advantage†. A marketing strategy is one of the most essential elements of a marketing plan. A number of marketing strategies are often developed as long-term plans. In such a case, an organization is often required to develop a tactical plan. A tactical plan spells out what an organization aims at achieving within a period of one year. There are different types of marketing strategies that a company c an adopt. The choice of a particular marketing strategy is largely determined by the situation analysis. For instance, the strengths and opportunities identified in the situation analysis determine the strategy that a company adopts. In most instances, a company’s success is determined by its strengths and opportunities. Similarly, the choice of a marketing strategy depends on an organization’s mission statement, as well as, the company’s goals and objectives. Some of the marketing strategies include the product differentiation strategy, cost leadership strategy, and the market focus strategy. The product differentiation strategy involves the creation of a product or service that is distinct from one’s competitors. Therefore, a company that adopts this strategy will have to ensure that its product has specific attributes that are unique from other products in the market. On the other hand, the cost leadership strategy is intended to enable a company to at tract cost-sensitive customers. Thus, a company will sell its product at a relatively lower price compared to its competitors. This strategy is most suitable for a company, which incurs lower production and marketing costs. The market focus strategy requires a company to describe its market scope. Thus, a company can choose to have a narrow market scope or a broader market scope. Additionally, â€Å"a company may opt to specialize in the production of a particular product in order to meet the unique needs of customers in a given market segment†. Samsung will adopt the product differentiation strategy. This strategy will be most suitable for commercialization and introduction of the Samsung galaxy tablet into the market. The Samsung galaxy tablet has a distinct model from other tablets in the market. Its model is user friendly and can enable internet users to enjoy lively internet browsing. For instance, the Samsung galaxy tablet has a wider screen, which can enable a user to perform multiple tasks. Additionally, the Samsung galaxy tablet is lighter; hence, portable. Market Segmentation Samsung targets people who are eighteen years and above. The company targets adults because the galaxy tablet will facilitate their activities. For example, the tablet has several applications with varied functions. The Samsung galaxy tablet will also be suitable for both male and female users. For instance, the galaxy tablet has different colors such as black, yellow, and silver. Thus, users have a chance to make a choice between the colors available. Additionally, the Samsung galaxy tablet is lighter. As a result, it can easily fit into a jacket’s pocket or in a handbag. Samsung also targets all professionals in various fields. For instance, the galaxy tablet will be suitable for businesspersons who use the internet several times in a day to communicate with clients. It is also suitable for professionals who may wish to prepare and make presentations. The galaxy tablet will also be suitable for professionals who travel regularly. Therefore, the Samsung galaxy tablet can enable them to work while travelling. Integrated Marketing Mix Product Samsung galaxy tablet is seven inches long. It has two cameras and is compatible with a flash disk. â€Å"The Samsung galaxy tablet uses Android 2.2 with market support†. It also has a number of pre-installed applications. Finally, â€Å"the Samsung galaxy tablet has five default home screens†. Price The Samsung galaxy tablet will cost approximately $600 to $500. However, the price will differ from one country to another. One of the major price determinants for the Samsung galaxy tablet will be the market situation in a given country. For instance, factors such as market competition and cost of operations incurred by distributors will influence the local prices in various countries. Location and Distribution Samsung dealers will distribute the Samsung galaxy tablet to all regions within thei r respective countries. The tablet will be available in the major retail stores in various countries. In addition, customers will also have the privilege to purchase the tablet from online stores. Promotion Samsung will use various advertisement channels to market its galaxy tablet. For instance, Samsung will use both print and electronic media for advertisement. The company also intends to organize major sales promotions in the first three months. Summary and recommendations for the execution of the plan This marketing plan aims at maximizing Samsung’s profits. It provides a detailed description of the company’s strengths such as a large market share, superior experience in the production of electronic devices, and sustained innovation. The company intends to use the product differentiation strategy as its marketing strategy. The company should take note of the following factors in order to execute the marketing plan effectively. First, the company should conduct regu lar evaluation in order to determine progress. It should use the evaluation results to make improvements where necessary. Second, the company should ensure a timely distribution of the tablets immediately after the launch of the galaxy tablet. Third, the company should minimize costs in the execution of the marketing plan in order to increase its gross profit margin Conclusion From the above discussion, it is evident that a marketing plan is a crucial tool that enables a company to have an edge over its competitors. It provides a situation analysis that spells out a company’s strengths and opportunities. Therefore, a marketing plan helps to focus a company’s operations, goals, and decisions. Marine Corps Business Research

Marine Corps Business Research Free Online Research Papers Business Research Applications Paper In every business atmosphere some form of research being conducted at all levels to improve performance, make better returns on investments, decide on the next project, and many other forms. Research is conducted to provide managers with decision making abilities. How a manager decides to complete one task over another is often based on research. This paper will focus on research in the Marine Corps. Business Research is defined as â€Å"a systematic inquiry that provides information to guide managerial decisions. More specifically, it is a process of planning, acquiring, analyzing, and disseminating relevant data, information, and insights to decision makers in ways that mobilize the organization to take appropriate actions that, in turn, maximize business performance.† (Cooper Schindler, 2006, p. 4). In the Marine Corps, many forms of research are being conducted at all times to improve the capabilities and cost effectiveness of the Service as a whole. Many different categories are covered in research in the Marine Corps such as Recruiting and Retention, Training and Education, Procurement and use of various forms of gear and warfighting. The area I will focus on specifically is the staple of the Marine Corps, Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare. Within the realm of Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare and Combating Terrorism Department, areas such as Command and Control, Firepower, Force Protection, Land Mine Countermeasures, Human Performance, Intelligence, Logistics and Maneuver are all areas of research. The mission of the Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare and Combating Terrorism Department as a whole is: To lead the Department of the Navys Science and Technology effort that develops future combat capabilities for Naval Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare and the Departments role in Combating Terrorism through the exploitation and subsequent application of Science and Technology in order to enhance the ability of the Navy-Marine Corps team to achieve assured access and conduct decisive operations as the naval portion of a Joint campaign. To lead the Department of the Navys Science and Technology effort that develops future combat capabilities for Naval Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare and the Departments role in Combating Terrorism through the exploitation and subsequent application of Science and Technology in order to enhance the ability of the Navy-Marine Corps team to achieve assured access and conduct decisive operations as the naval portion of a Joint campaign. The specific components of the Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare and Combating Terrorism Department are below. Command and Control, often referred to as C2, is basically the use of authority and direction of a commander over assigned forces to accomplish a mission. In today’s use of many forms of communication the C2 has become C4, Command and Control, Computers and Communication. C4 research is aimed at â€Å"markedly improving on capabilities in over-the-horizon, beyond line-of-sight, and restricted environment communications; mobile networking; tactical decision making; tactical situational awareness; and small unit position location and navigation.† (United States Navy, 2009). Firepower research is meant to â€Å"develop advanced technologies for application on current and future Marine Corp Expeditionary Firepower systems and all other elements of the kill chain. Current efforts focus on enhanced accuracy, tailored lethality, improved mobility, enhanced targeting and lightweight components.† (United States Navy, 2009). Force Protection research is meant to â€Å"develop, demonstrate and transition advanced technologies for future protection of today’s warfighter in the areas of individual Marine platforms, equipment and autonomous systems. Enhance the ability to stop the most common threats, counter and readily adapt to future threats from a global network of violent extremists while minimizing impact on mission accomplishment.† (United States Navy, 2009). Mine Counter Measures (MCM) division â€Å"develops technologies for critical Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Mine Countermeasures needs to make sea and land MCM an integrated, seamless, and fully integral component of Expeditionary Maneuver Warefare. Focus areas include landmine detection, breaching/neutralization of all mine types and enhanced survivability.† (United States Navy, 2009). Human Performance, Training and Survivability (HPTS) division focuses on the ability to â€Å"empower today’s warfighter by closing human performance gaps using training and survivability solutions, thereby creating tomorrow’s superior warrior. HPTS is defined broadly to include all aspects of human performance in the domains of Cognitive Performance, Physical Performance and Survivability, and Training Technology Enhancement.† (United States Navy, 2009). Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance division focuses on â€Å"developing and leveraging advanced technologies for applications in future intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Enhance situational awareness, and tactical decision making.† (United States Navy, 2009). The Logistics division focuses on â€Å"developing and maturing technologies for application to current and future Marine Corps expeditionary systems. Focus is on supporting on the tenets of Seabased Logistics with emerging technologies focusing of improved distribution, reduced combat load in areas of fuel, water and energy and improved maintenance capabilities.† (United States Navy, 2009). Lastly, the Maneuver division focuses on â€Å"developing, demonstrating, and transitioning technologies that will increase the warfighting capabilities and effectiveness of the MAGTF. This Thrust will capture emerging and â€Å"leap ahead† technologies in the areas of mobility, materials, propulsion, survivability and unmanned systems.† (United States Navy, 2009). All these divisions are focused on making the Marine Corps a better and more capable fighting force. I believe that the Marine Corps has every tool needed to conduct research properly and that the research is conducted in a manner which will best suit the needs of the Corps. The Marine Corps puts very capable people in positions to best effect change in needed areas. Every Marine will conduct a debrief of every mission, no matter the size or scope, once the mission is complete. These â€Å"after action† reports are always sent to higher headquarters for review and will eventually make it to the â€Å"Lessons Learned† division. Once the missions and briefs reach this level, a report will be generated and sent out to the Marine Corps as a whole. Every Marine will be informed of the problems and success areas of every mission. The lessons learned are sent directly to the schools that teach a particular skill to improve the abilities and knowledge of the young Marines being trained. Research that is conducted in the warfighting area of the Marine Corps is done very well. One are that I believe needs improvement is the military career development. I believe that many young Marines are not informed of the opportunities that are available, or the steps needed to be successful early in their careers. Young Marines are often focused on learning skills needed for their particular job. This often creates an atmosphere where little time available for professional growth as a careerist. I know and understand that many Marines will only serve a short period on active duty, usually four years, and they are not concerned with what they are doing now and how it may affect their career years down the road. If more training research were conducted to improve the knowledge of young Marines for their future, I believe many Marines would stay in the Marine Corps and be more successful in every aspect of their life. Regardless of the business type, research is required to be successful. Every manager, leader or executive must have good research in order to make informed and sound decisions. The Marine Corps is well aware of the need for research and does a very good job of it in most areas. Throughout this paper, I have discussed many forms of research currently being conducted for the warfighting portion of the Marine Corps now and into the future. References 1. Strategic Human Resource Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Strategic Human Resource Management - Essay Example It is important to note that it is difficult to have a consistent HRM approach in the presence of workforce representing multiple demographic segments as compared to earlier uniform workforce. This periodic and apparently long-term change requires management to have flexibility in its practices in order to maintain a positive psychological contract with a diversified workforce comprising of people from different cultures, ages and genders. Therefore, it is essential to determine if SHRM approach and flexibility in its practices can present employers with effective and desired outcomes. Since there are multiple forms of flexible practices used by employers, it is also important to identify likely consequences of these flexible approaches in the light of SHRM. Hence, SHRM advocates integrating HRM functions and organisational goals in order to respond to requirements of external environment. Four major forms of flexibility offered by SHRM are changes in employment models of wage, funct ion, numerical status i.e. contracts, and temporal state i.e. number and patterns of hours worked (Kalleberg, 2001). Different Forms of Flexibility There are various forms of flexible approach that govern current ideology of strategic human resource management. These flexible approaches entail practices regarding workplace, scheduling and compensation. Although a general perception of flexible HRM approach is viewed as employees working from remote locations however it is a more extensive phenomenon than that as not every job can be handled remotely. The term flexibility itself refers to organisation’s ability of adjusting its workforce numerically, functionally and financially in response to external environment and employees’ needs with reference to structure of the business (Wu, 2010, pp. 278-9). The concept of ‘flexible firm’ provided by Atkinson (1985) acts as a foundation behind workplace flexibility and its relation to strategic human resource manag ement. A flexible firm or employer is able to change number of employees according to its needs and also alter source of acquiring potential talent i.e. permanent or temporary hiring, outsourcing or part-time/ remote work arrangements. Another major area concerning flexibility offered by SHRM is the alteration in organisational structure followed by work design. As organizations have transformed into humanistic employers, their organisational model has become more decentralised with reduced bureaucracy. Reduction in levels of management has made employees more accountable and participative in organisational decision making (Armstrong, 2009). Another important element of ensuring flexibility in organisational practices is training employees with reference to external environment. Updating organisational skills’ base is essential for acquiring necessary competitive edge over other firms. The concept of upgrading is also supported by Armstrong (2008) as he has considered adaptat ion to be an important element of employer’s flexibility and adoption of SHRM as a fundamental ideology. Armstrong (2008) and Purcell (2001) have further presented three concepts i.e. resource-based view, strategic fit and strategic flexibility to be the foundation of strategic human resource management which is also supported by Wei (2006).

Discussion Question - Assignment Example Southern people feared that the North would gain strength and push abolition of slavery. The regional conflict between the North and South affected the political environment. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 saw the Northerners getting from the Union and formed a new slave state called Missouri while Maine became a slavery-free territory. The stands of North and South on slavery also influenced the compromise of 1850 that gave rise to doctrine of states’ rights (Brands, Breen, Williams & Gross, 2012). Both divisions were pushing for a state that would have equal leaders from slave and Free states. However, the compromise led to a bigger conflict that divided the two regions even further than in the beginning. Anti-slavery call inspired Abraham Lincoln rise to presidency. The North backed his candidacy because his victory would automatically impose their will on South. The Southern states did not have him on the ballot, but he won and brought moderate rule on slavery. The Southern states believed that Lincoln was against them. However, Lincoln did not have plans of violating doctrine of states’ rights in a bid to deal with the tension between the North and the

HOW ARE TENSION AND SUSPENSE BUILT UP AND MAINTAINED IN AT LEAST TWO :: English Literature

HOW ARE TENSION AND SUSPENSE BUILT UP AND MAINTAINED IN AT LEAST TWO GOTHIC HORROR STORIES? The original use of the term `Gothic Horror' was applied to a group of novels, including Mary Shelley's `Frankenstein', written before 1914. These novels usually included some or all of the following characteristics, which seem demonstrative of the original use of the term `Gothic': An emphasis on portraying the terrifying, a common insistence on archaic settings, a prominent use of the supernatural, the presence of highly stereotyped characters, barbarism as opposed to elegance, and the attempt to set up and perfect techniques of literary suspense. Bram Stoker's `Dracula' would be another example as the novel includes most of the characteristics above. The setting would generally have a sense of eeriness and darkness and there is usually a lack of an escape route. This can make a character experience a dramatic loss of self-control and overwhelming emotions. A sense of helplessness or vulnerability heightens the dramatic climaxes of these stories. As well as vulnerable characters appearing in these stories there would also be a rational, scientifically thinking character. He, or she, would represent the newly literate middle class and would have lent credibility to the tale. ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ is an example of a pre 1914 Gothic Horror story. It is about a man who receives a paw which can allow people to make a wish but can also cause evil things to happen. Mr White wished for two hundred pounds, which he was given, but as compensation for the coincidental death of his son. Mrs White came up with the idea to wish for their son to come back. Mr White, knowing that his son would be mutilated after being buried for nine days, wished for everything to be back to normal after they received a strange knock on their door in the early hours of the morning. ‘The Red Room’ is about a protagonist who visits ‘Lorraine Castle’, in a deserted place, to see whether the stories of a haunted room were true. After a long walk through the castle he gets to the room. On his way there he encounters ordinary objects which look menacing due to the contrast of the moonlight. Once in the red room strange things started happening. What made the room feel haunted was fear. In the Victorian era, pre 1914, people were very rational. People in the 19th Century had just come out of the Industrial Revolution, they were more educated than before and by then they had became less superstitious ‘of the myths about earls, countesses or the timid wife’, mockingly alluded to in 'The Red Room'.

Write a comprehensive note on the role of a teacher in the Montessori classroom

The teacher in a Montessori classroom takes on a completely different role to a teacher in a traditional classroom. So much so, that directress or guide are preferred over the word teacher. The reason for this is that it is the teachers main role to guide the children and help the children in their learning. The teacher isn't a person who pushes the child to learn when & what she wants them to learn. The teacher doesn't cause the child to learn. They aren't the conduit for knowledge that than flows into the child's mind. The child's active mind will do the learning on its own.Being a guide doesn't just consist of just talking to the children. A guide must be aware of each child's personality, how they work, what they are interested and which stage of development that are at. They must also understand child development and growth. The guide must also be aware of her behaviour and attitudes as well. The teacher is responsible for putting Montessori principles into practise in the classr oom. The environment in a Montessori classroom is also vitally important. It is the role of the teacher to prepare the environment to allow the learning process to happen naturally.A full understanding of the Montessori method is vital so she she can use the correct classroom materials and techniques to encourage the child's learning. A teacher shouldn't be the focal point in the environment she is creating. The learning materials very important and must cater for the needs and interests of the children in her class. She will usually be found working with an individual child or a couple at at time. It is very rare that the teacher will present a large group lesson. She may present a new lesson and observe and advise the students, as the priority is the child's learning. She needs to meet as many needs as possible for as many students as possible each day. This is a big part of planning the environment because each child is an individual with different needs and are all at different d evelopmental stages. Interests, desires and learning styles also differ immensely. It is important that all these factors and all students are considered when preparing an environment. When an enviroment is set up correctly students should be able to easily choose their own activities and find their own answers to problems with their teacher there to mentor and guide them.Students will be scattered through out a peaceful classroom, individually or in small groups of 2's and 3's, totally absorbed in working on appropriate activities for their stage of development. Often it can be difficult to pick out the teacher in the type of environment. A teacher in a Montessori classroom would normally be involved in the following activities through the course of a day. Preparation of the environment. This needs to be in line with the students in her class, the activities they are interested in and the stages of development they are at.She is the link between the environment and the child and is engaged actively between the two. The teacher is also responsible to keep the classroom in perfect condition. It is important that the children can make their own choices easily. The environment needs to be changed and updated whenever required. At times things will need to be added and at other times, things taken away. The teacher will experiment with the environment to work out what is needed to meet the needs of her children. Observing the child is vital in the Montessori classroom.By constantly observing the children, the teacher is able to understand their interests and tailor the environment to suit. All observations should be done in a systematic way and all observations must be noted. Through these observations the teacher is always aware of the children's sensitive periods, their progress, needs & interests. She is always carefully noting the outcomes of her observations. A Montessori teacher will give only brief lessons. She does this with the simplest information needed to entice the child to work alone on the project that he is curious about. Her presentations need to be demonstrated in a clear and interesting fashion which is relevant to the child. The way this all comes about is, the teacher will be watching the child as they explore the shelves & equipment to make their choice. She will go to the child and take consent to work with that particular material or piece of equipment. She will get the child to help take the material to an area where he will work and specify its place on the shelf. The teacher gives the child the rules for using that piece of equipment and gives a brief, precise demonstration of the things that can be done with that equipment. This demonstration is a brief introduction and an initial exploratory procedure. The child is encouraged to explore further on their own. The goal of Montessori is for the child to become independent and self disciplined. Presentations let the child investigate, work autonomously and at their own pace, moving on to the next step when they have achieved their objective, therefore helping to achieve independence as the child learns to use the materials & the classroom with a minimum amount of supervision and no interruptions. The main purposes of a Montessori guide are to focus on the child rather than the lesson. She evaluates the child and his progress each day. Through these evaluations she is also discovering whether her preparation of the environment has been effective too. The teacher nurtures the child and inspires him to ask questions and be a thinker so he can discover and keep exploring for himself. She does all this in an atmosphere of warmth, safety, stability and friendship. She is the child's mentor & coach. She learns when it is appropriate to offer help or set limits and when it is best to leave the child to himself. She needs to communicate with the child and encourage him to communicate with her. She is a role model for the children in the area of behaviour an d consistency and also follows the classroom rules as an example to the child. It is her responsibility to report to parents and other staff on the progress of each child. The roles of a Montessori teacher are wide & varied and one where the child's best interest is of the highest value.
